He was raised by a man at Goldpoint (by the river in Soddy) named Houston Hixson. b 3-22-1829 d 10-29-1898 m Nancy E. b 9-8-1832 d 1-16-1893. They are buried at the Old Hixson Cemetery. Matt's death certificate list's Lizzie Miller as his Mother. His name is spelled Mat Abenetty in the marriage to Becky, his second wife.

Viola was a little short chubby woman and a good Christian. She went to the Soddy Methodist Church. She was not an affectionate grandmother, but the children knew she loved them by the things she did for them, and she made no difference between them. She treated them all the same. She contracted bladder and kidney trouble and also died in their homeplace. She washed clothes for people in the neighborhood and was a hard worker.

Notes for JOHN BRUMLOW:

Buried in Soddy Presbyterian Cemetery. John and Sarah Viola are buried in unmarked graves just West of Icey and Poly Upton's graves. He was a coal miner all his life and followed the mines. He and his family traveled to Durham, GA (on Lookout Mountain), Harveyton, KY (near Hazard), and Muddy, Illinois, (near Harrisburg). They worked in mines and he and his sons also mined in Soddy between travels. John and Viola had both children and grandchildren born in mining camps. John's sisters Icalene, Tee, Ersie and brother George also lived with him and Viola after their parent's deaths.

John was very good looking, and known for his dry sense of humor. He was a big, tall, robust fellow, not very talkative, but when he did talk he meant what he said. He was also a very proud man.

He used to ha e a hog lot near their home in Brumlow Hollow. He'd clasp his hands behind his back and walk up the hill in the evenings, on the way stopping to make whistles for the kid's. He died in the homeplace in the hollow where his daughter Reba now lives.

Buried in Deepdale Memorial Park Cemetery 4-30-1947 in East Lansing, Eaton County, Michigan. Don Disney relates this story: Did you know your Grandfather Sam Abernathy was a "douser"? You've heard you never really forget anything. A day or two ago I saw a show on TV that triggered a memory about something that happened when I was about six or seven years old. At that time we lived in Wasson about three miles from Muddy. It was a three room house-no electricity and no running water. We had a cistern just behind our back door that was our source of water. It had a little hand pump to move the water up to the top of the cistern. When it rained we turned a gutter that directed the rain water from the roof into the cistern. One Saturday morning three men showed up at our house. One of them walked out to a peach tree in our orchard and cut a "Y" shaped limb. Then he began walking back and forth with that limb moving up and down. He was searching for water so we could have a well on our property. I was fascinated with that limb moving from horizontal to straight down. After several passes in a certain area, the douser dropped the "wand" on the ground, and they began digging for water.

The man who was "dousing" was your Grandfather, Sam Abernathy. After he tossed the "wand" away I picked it up. I held it the way he did and also began walking back and forth. I don't know what caused it, but when that "wand" began to move down I couldn't stop it. Sam Abernathy was short, stocky and very strong and was able to hold the ends of that "wand" when it began to move down until the bark actually separated from the wood. Don Disney is s/o Joe "Wheeler" Disney..brother to Ethel Rachel Disney Aberanthy.

Sam and Ethel moved to Lansing, MI in 1942. They bought their first house on five acres of land. Sam loved this house and land. He built a chicken coop, and bought his first tractor. Unfortunately he died only five years after purchasing his home and land.

He was nicknamed "hard rock" after another person broke a broomstick over his head when he was a child. Someone remarked he had a head as hard as a rock. He is buried at Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Chattanooga, TN. He was a miner and served in WW11. He was wounded in WWII as the result of shrapnel striking him in the arm and leg. His right leg was amputated above the knee, which necessitated a large belt type of prosthesis. He was a great believer in God, and practiced his religion daily. He was very optimistic about life, and had a great sense of humor and enjoyed life.
